I’m not going to list all of my favorites, but here are a few that I really love.
1. West Side Story (Original, 1961)
This musical is written on my heart, backwards and forwards. I’ve memorized so much of it. I grew up on it.

2. Music and Lyrics (2007)
Starring Drew Barrymore, this is a super cute rom-com that features a relationship built around writing music. I’ve watched it countless times. There is also a kind of epic cheesy music video that is hard to beat. I realized what year it was released, maybe a week ago, and have been in denial about my age ever since, which is fine.

3. The Sound of Music (1965)
Evergreen, gold, beauty. It’s a musical that is definitely leaning into also being art. Not all musicals from this time period were quite as heavy on the “art” aspect. It’s incredible.

4. Barbie (2023)
I realize how new it is, but I’m just so impressed with the messaging within this movie. Definitely the best movie I’ve seen in a decade, and it belongs on this list. I would also like to add in the Oscars performance of Ryan Gosling as connected with this movie’s existence.
(Also… who did this gallop first? Was it in Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Was it in Much Ado About Nothing? Whoever started the crazy galloping without a horse trend, I was very happy to see it again).

5. Galaxy Quest (1999)
Aeh!! aeh!!! *vertical clap clap clap*
By Grabthar’s Hammer, I’m not going to give you spoilers but you should definitely watch this if you haven’t already.

6. Star Trek: Generations (1994)
This is just an epic movie, especially for Star Trek nerds 🖖 like me. It’s good, regardless. Really makes you reflect. But I think it just takes things to the next level for people who already love the characters and the story.

7. A Walk To Remember (2002)
I just love this movie. It had a big influence on me growing up.
That’s all for now.
