The recent events in Afghanistan have been heartbreaking, to say the least. With the Taliban takeover, basic human rights and assurance of safety is at risk. People are currently dying in stampedes as they attempt to reach the airport to escape.
I’ve been on the lookout this week for ways to help, and thought I’d make a summary here.
Along with donating to aid organizations, you can
- text CRISIS to 52886, and it will connect you with a message you can send to your representatives in Congress
- follow people on Instagram who are doing good work, and highlight what they’re doing in your stories. One of my favorites is @tooyoungtowed This organization helps support women and end child marriages. They are doing some direct work with people in Afghanistan.
This New York Times article has an excellent list of organizations doing good and helping with the Afghanistan crisis. Here are a some of the organizations that I’ll highlight:
- Human Rights First They are seeking to offer legal services to displaced Afghans.
- The International Refugee Assistance Project They are supporting the evacuation effort and are also involved in ongoing assistance to refugees, along with legal services
- Keeping Our Promise helps with resettlement services
- The International Rescue Committee is working to help people in Afghanistan both locally and once they are able to escape
- The International Medical Corps is providing lifesaving aid on the ground in Afghanistan
[…] What’s certain, at this point, is that people need help. My heart is breaking with the famillies’ of many Afghanis and Americans who have been wounded and killed recently, and especially in the bombing today. I’ve written about some ways you can help here. […]
