(Photo from earlier this week. The roses opened up)

This past week held a mixture of things. One of our extended family members unfortunately passed away, which was difficult. Her family is on our hearts. Alex took a trip.

I had some time alone with the kids, which was special. They had to miss a birthday party (since I can’t be around latex balloons), so we did a movie night instead- their idea, with popcorn, brownies and hot chocolate. Moana 2 was the selection and you know what? It is not a bad movie. Neither is the first Moana.

I’m grieving a lot at the same time.

Politics-zone

I read a New York Times article (link) about current deportation efforts and it’s terrible. Apparently people may deported to Libya, into terrible conditions.

Really at this point it seems to be able power and symbolism more than anything else, and people are paying the price with their lives, and it isn’t ok. Made my rep phone calls this morning. Remember, even something as simple as saying you’re “calling to protest X” is enough. It gets tallied, and if everyone does it, it really does make a difference.

Most people I know who’ve supported stricter immigration policies have made it about the “rule of law,” which, when a president ignores the Supreme Court, is deporting people without due process, accusing them of being “violent gang members” based on things like tattoos, and is deporting US citizens, current actions are clearly not about that at all. Even people who have more conservative views should be protesting.

And then of course there are the facts that the vast majority of us in the US are descended from actually violent illegal immigrants on this continent, and the fact that it is cruel and inhumane to uproot someone from a life they have established, especially when they are following the rules and showing up to immigration appointments, etc. I think that if Lady Liberty were to see ICE officers arresting people at immigration appointments where they are following the rules, she would rip off her dress in protest.

I’ve seen some say that they live in conservative areas and are discouraged about contacting reps, but if that’s you, you matter more, in a way, right now, actually, because your reps care about re-election.

I’m gonna write my politics-free post but wanted to suggest a calling of the reps. Emailing of the reps is good too of course. Here is a post with ideas for how to overcome the entropy and do something small.
